Biography - Otto Heinrich Frank

Otto Heinrich Frank was born in Frankfurt am Main on May 12, 1889. His ancestors had lived in the city since the 16th century. During the First World War, he fought against France as a German soldier and was awarded the Iron Cross. Until deprived of citizenship by the National Socialists, he was a German citizen. On May 12, 1925, Otto Frank married Edith Holländer (born in Aachen on January 16, 1900). They had two daughters: Margot Betty Frank (born on February 16, 1926) and Anne Marie Frank (born on June 12, 1929).

August 1933 After the Nazis come to power, Otto Frank emigrates from Frankfurt am Main to Amsterdam.
1934 His wife and daughters follow him to Amsterdam.
1942 More stringent measures come into force against the Jewish population in the Netherlands.
July 6, 1942 The Frank family go into hiding in the secret annex at Prinsengracht 263. A total of eight people hide there from the Nazis.
August 4, 1944 Betrayal, arrest and deportation of all those in hiding.
August 8, 1944 Sent to Westerbork concentration camp (NL).
September 3, 1944 Otto Frank is deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp (PL) on the last transport from Westerbork.
June 3, 1945 As the sole survivor of the Frank family, Otto Frank returns to Amsterdam from the Auschwitz concentration camp via Russia. Soon after he learns of the death of his daughters. Mies Giep gives him his daughter Anne's diary that she had found in the secret annex after the family was arrested.
November 1945 Otto Frank copies out the diary and works on having it published.
April 3, 1946 Jan Romein publishes an article about the diary of Anne Frank in Het Parool
June, 25 1947 The diary is published for the first time as Het Achterhuis by Uitgeverij Contact in Amsterdam with a print run of 3000 copies.
1950 First German edition of the diary published by Lambert Schneider
1953 Otto Frank moves to live with his relatives in Basel/Switzerland.
November 10, 1953 Marries Elfriede Geiringer-Markovits (1905-1998).
Subsequently Otto Frank dedicates himself to publishing the diary of his daughter Anne.
January 24, 1963 Founds the Anne Frank Fonds in Basel.
August 19, 1980 Otto Frank dies in Birsfelden near Basel, where he is buried.
